Greg Raymer is most famous for winning the 2004 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event and becoming the world champion of poker, defeating David Williams heads-up to win a then record prize of $5,000,000. The following year, Raymer finished 25th (out of 5,619 entrants) in the 2005 WSOP Main Event, earning him $304,680. Arguably, this two-year accomplishment ranks as one of the most impressive performances in Main Event history. At the 2009 World Series of Poker $40,000 No Limit holdem 40th anniversary event, he placed third out of 201 entrants and won $774,927, his second biggest cash to date.
In 2012, Greg won an unprecedented four Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) events. On July 30, he bested 130 opponents at the Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque, New Mexico; on October 1, he defeated 335 players at the River City Casino in St. Louis; on October 22, he took down another title at the Prairie Meadows Racetrack Casino In Iowa; and on November 19 he capped it off with a win at the HPT Championship Open at the Belterra Casino in Indiana. Raymer easily won the HPT Player of The Year title that year, and to date no other player has yet to achieve 4 wins on the HPT in their career, let alone in a single season.
Greg has also enjoyed much success in the online poker world, being a regular winner in cash games, not only in no-limit holdem, but more so in the mixed games. He has also had success in online poker tournaments, including winning a bracelet by taking down Event #6, $320 Pot Limit Omaha with rebuys on September 17, 2007, in the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) for $168,362.
As of 2017, his total tournament winnings exceed $8 million.
Family is important to Greg, he and his wife Cheryl have been married since 1994, and have one child, a daughter Sophie born in 1996. Greg was born in 1964 in Minot, North Dakota, an Air Force brat. However, when just a few months old, his father finished his military service, and took the family back to his home in Michigan. Greg grew up in Lansing until the age of 11, when he moved to the Tampa, Florida area. After a few years, he moved to Manchester, Missouri, in the suburbs of St. Louis, where he graduated from Parkway South H.S. Greg then attended the U. of Missouri at Rolla, where he joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity and graduated in 1985 with a B.S. in Chemistry. Moving again, Greg attended the U. of Minnesota, obtaining a M.S. in Biochemistry in 1989, and a J.D. in 1992. While in Minnesota Greg was a part-time stand-up comic, as well as a part-time card counter at blackjack. He was also a radio and party DJ while a student in both Minnesota and Missouri.
In school until he was 28 years old, Greg now entered the legal world as a patent attorney. His first permanent job was for a big I.P. litigation law firm in Chicago for 3 years. Then, deciding that he preferred not to litigate, he worked for another law firm in San Diego for 3 years specializing in Biotechnology patent preparation and prosecution. The law firm lifestyle, where you work 60-80 hours per week, was not conducive to family life, so Greg went to the corporate world, accepting a position with Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, at their research facility in Groton, CT. He lived in Stonington, CT, the next town over, from late 1998, until just after winning the WSOP in 2004. He finally moved to Raleigh, NC, and lives there to this day.
Raymer has lobbied extensively to have poker regulated and classified as a game of skill, as well as for the rights of poker players in general. As part of this effort, he is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Poker Players Alliance. In a December 2006 interview, Raymer said that he was considering running for Vice President of the United States in 2008 as a candidate of the Libertarian Party. However, Raymer did not end up running, but is still a strong advocate for libertarian policies in general. On December 20, 2004, two men attempted to rob Raymer at gunpoint as he returned to his Bellagio hotel room after playing in a cash game. Raymer held them off until police arrived, escaping unharmed and with his bankroll intact.
Greg loves to teach, and had wanted to go into teaching as a youth. Soon after winning the WSOP Main Event, he worked as the primary lead instructor for the WSOP Academy. Since 2011, Raymer has operated a poker training school called FossilMan Poker Training. The 2-8 hour training classes are conducted at poker rooms around the US and Canada. Moving forward, Greg will still be offering live classes, and through his association with PokerMania, he will be offering online training seminar videos as well as real-time Q&A sessions.
